What is the best time to kitesurf in Sri Lanka?
May to September (southwest monsoon, 20–30 knots, stronger wind) and December to March (northeast monsoon, 15–22 knots, better for beginners). April, October, and November are shoulder months with lighter, variable wind.
How many days should I book for a kitesurfing holiday?
5 to 7 days is ideal. It gives beginners 3–5 lesson days (accounting for possible low-wind days), plus time for lagoon tours, dolphin watching, or relaxing by the pool. Valampuri's most popular packages start at 3 nights, with the Independent Rider Bungalow Week running 5 nights (€590 pp).
What is a typical day like on a kite holiday?
A typical day: breakfast at the resort, morning kite session (2–3 hours), lunch at the restaurant, free time (pool, kayak, nap), optional second session if wind holds, sunset from the lagoon, dinner (seafood, Sri Lankan rice and curry, or Western options).
How long does it take to learn to kitesurf?
Most complete beginners need 6 to 9 hours of instruction. The 9-hour IKO Level 3 course takes most students from zero to their first independent rides, spread across 3 to 5 days.
Is Kalpitiya good for beginner kitesurfing lessons?
Yes. Kalpitiya Lagoon is one of the best places in Sri Lanka for beginner kitesurfing lessons because the water is flatter than the open sea and the lagoon gives students space to practise safely.
Do I need experience to come to Valampuri?
No. The school is set up for complete beginners. The lagoon is shallow, flat, and protected — the best possible environment for first lessons. Experienced riders are equally welcome and can rent gear and explore independently.
What kite sizes do you have for rental?
Duotone kites from 9m to 14m. Smaller sizes (9m–10m) suit stronger southwest wind; larger sizes (12m–14m) suit the lighter northeast season and beginners. Twin-tip boards, harnesses, bars, and safety leashes also available.
What wind speeds should I expect?
Southwest season (May–Sep): 20–30 knots at most spots. Northeast season (Dec–Mar): 15–22 knots. Dream Spot can see 20–30 knots in the right conditions; Vella Island typically runs 18–28 knots. Exact conditions vary by day — we give you a daily forecast briefing.

The main lagoon teaching area is on-site. Dream Spot is 15–20 minutes by boat. Vella Island is 30–40 minutes by boat. All trips include boat transport and support.

Can non-kiters enjoy a stay at Valampuri?

Rental is available for independent riders who can ride safely. If you are not independent yet, lessons or a refresher session are recommended first.
Is Kalpitiya better than Dakhla or Tarifa for beginners?
For beginners specifically, Kalpitiya has advantages: warmer water (27–30°C vs 18–20°C in Dakhla), a protected lagoon similar to Dakhla, and lower cost of instruction. Tarifa is better suited to intermediate and advanced riders. Kalpitiya's two seasons also give more flexibility on travel dates.

WhatsApp is the fastest way: send your dates, current level, and what you want (lessons / rental / trip) and we respond same day. You can also use the contact form. No third-party booking fee — direct booking only.
What should I pack for a kite trip to Kalpitiya?
Boardshorts or a rash vest (no wetsuit needed), reef shoes if you plan to explore sandbanks, sunscreen, a dry bag for boat trips, and a GoPro if you want footage. The resort provides all kite equipment — leave your gear at home and travel lighter.
