Five pieces of gear stand between you and your first ride. Here is what each one does, what size works on Kalpitiya Lagoon, and why you don't need to buy any of it before your first lesson.
To start kitesurfing you need five things: a kite, a control bar with lines, a harness, a board, and safety gear. Beginners in Kalpitiya typically ride 7–12 m kites depending on body weight and wind strength. You do not need to buy anything for your first lessons — at Valampuri Resort all lesson equipment is included (Duotone kites, board, bar, harness and safety gear), and independent riders can rent full sets at the resort instead of paying airline board-bag fees.
The gear, piece by piece
A kitesurfing setup looks complicated on the beach. It isn't. Five items, each with one job.
Your engine. Modern inflatable kites relaunch from the water and depower quickly when you let go of the bar. Size is measured in square metres — bigger kite, more pull. Beginners start on mid-size kites matched to their weight and the day's wind.
Your steering wheel and brakes in one. Pull the bar to power up, push it away to depower. The safety release on the bar lets you kill all power instantly — it is the first thing any good instructor teaches.
Takes the pull of the kite on your body so your arms only steer. Beginners usually start with a seat harness (harder to slide up), then move to a waist harness as technique improves.
A twin-tip board rides in both directions, so you never have to turn it around — that is what nearly everyone learns on. Larger boards give more float and forgiveness, which is why beginner boards are big.
Helmet, buoyancy aid, and a kite leash connected to the safety system. On lessons at Valampuri this is standard issue, alongside walkie-talkie coaching and rescue boat cover on the lagoon.
Kite size in Kalpitiya
Kite size depends on two things: your weight and the wind. Kalpitiya's two wind seasons deliver steady wind, which is why the lagoon suits learners so well — you are not constantly changing kites for gusts and holes.
These are starting points, not rules. On lessons the school picks the kite for you each session based on the wind that day — one less decision to get wrong while you learn.
Bring or rent?
If you already own equipment you love, bring it — most airlines take board bags, though fees vary a lot. For everyone else the maths usually favours renting: no bag fees, no risk of damaged gear in transit, and the right kite size for each day instead of only the sizes you packed.
Valampuri keeps Duotone equipment on-site for lessons and rentals, with boat support on the water. If your gear breaks mid-trip, rental cover also means your holiday doesn't stop.
What to wear
Kalpitiya's water stays warm all year, so you ride in boardshorts or a swimsuit. Most riders add a lycra rash vest for sun protection — the tropical sun is the real hazard here, not the cold. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses you don't mind losing, and that's the packing list.
Everything heavy stays at home. That is one of the quiet advantages of learning in the tropics instead of Europe: no 4 mm of neoprene between you and the water.

No. All equipment is included in lessons at Valampuri — Duotone kite, bar, board, harness, helmet and buoyancy aid. Most people buy their own gear only after passing the IKO independent-rider level, once they know what suits their riding.
Most beginners in Kalpitiya ride between 7 m and 12 m depending on body weight and the day's wind — around 9–11 m for a rider of 60–80 kg. On lessons the school selects the kite size for you each session.
